The creative dividend: why AI's real gift is giving us back our imagination
AI's biggest gift isn't efficiency — it's freeing us to think creatively again. Here's why imagination is your real competitive edge.
I've been automating things for over twenty years. Workflows, reports, dashboards, integrations — if it could be streamlined, I was usually the one building the pipe. And for most of that time, the pitch was always the same: automation saves you time.
What nobody told me was what you're supposed to do with the time you get back.
For a long while, the answer was "more of the same, but faster." Automate the reporting, then build more reports. Streamline the pipeline, then process more data. The tools got better, but the work stayed remarkably similar. We just did more of it.
AI has changed that equation — and not in the way most people think.
The great unburdening
There's a piece doing the rounds from The Next Web that frames this rather well. The argument is that AI is creating a "creative renaissance" by taking the drudgery off our plates. I'd go further: the real opportunity isn't just freeing up hours, it's freeing up headspace.
But here's the thing — that only happens if you're deliberate about it. The default path is to fill the reclaimed time with more tasks, more output, more busywork. AI makes it seductively easy to just do more. The real discipline is choosing to do different — to protect that reclaimed space for the kind of thinking that moves things forward.
I noticed this in my own work about a year ago. I'd started using AI assistants for the repetitive stuff — first drafts, data summaries, code scaffolding — and I made a conscious decision not to fill the gap with more of the same. Instead, I sat with the discomfort of unstructured thinking time. And something unexpected happened. I started having better ideas. Not because I was smarter, but because I'd given myself room to think.
Creativity isn't what you think it is
Here's where I think the conversation goes wrong. People hear "creativity" and picture artists and designers. But creative thinking is just the ability to connect ideas in ways that haven't been connected before. It's pattern recognition across domains. It's asking "what if?" instead of "how do we optimise?"
In my experience, the most valuable creative skill in business isn't wild imagination — it's the ability to look at a problem sideways. To ask the question nobody else thought to ask.
Elon Musk is a good example, whatever you think of the man. When everyone in the space industry was asking "how do we make rockets cheaper to build?", Musk asked "why can't we reuse them?" That's not a technical insight — it's a creative reframe. The engineers had the skills to solve the problem. It took a sideways thinker to redefine what the problem actually was.
Two companies can use the exact same AI tools. One gets competent but forgettable output. The other gets work that actually moves the needle. The difference is never the technology. It's the human deciding what to point it at and what questions to ask.
The technician trap, again
If you've read my earlier pieces on the E-Myth, you'll recognise the pattern. Michael Gerber warned about the "technician trap" decades ago — business owners who get so absorbed in doing the work that they never step back to think about the business.
AI makes this worse before it makes it better. The temptation is to use AI to do more technical work, faster. More content, more analysis, more reports. But the real opportunity is the opposite: use AI to handle the technical work so you can finally do the thinking work.
The creative work. The strategic work. The "why are we doing this at all?" work.
I've seen this with clients who adopt AI tools. The ones who thrive aren't the ones generating the most output. They're the ones who took the time savings and invested them in thinking — about their market, their customers, their next move.
What this means practically
The World Economic Forum projects that 92 million roles will be displaced by 2030, but 170 million new ones will emerge. The skills driving those new roles? Creative thinking, resilience, flexibility. Not prompt engineering or AI tool mastery — those are table stakes. The real differentiator is what you do with the space AI creates.
Here's what I'd suggest:
- Protect your thinking time. When AI saves you two hours, don't fill them with more busywork. Block that time for strategic thinking, even if it feels unproductive at first. This takes real discipline — the pull towards "just one more task" is strong.
- Ask better questions. "How can we make this 10% better?" is a fine question. "Why are we doing this at all?" is a better one. AI can optimise. Only you can reimagine.
- Connect across domains. The most creative insights come from combining ideas that don't obviously belong together. Read widely. Talk to people outside your industry. Let your brain make connections that no model would predict.
- Get comfortable with ambiguity. AI excels at well-defined problems. The messy, undefined ones — the ones worth solving — still need human imagination.
The takeaway
AI's biggest contribution won't be efficiency. It'll be giving us the option to think again — to wonder, to question, to imagine things that don't exist yet. But it's only an option. You have to choose it.
The people who recognise this early and invest their reclaimed time in creative thinking rather than more productivity will have an extraordinary advantage. The next decade doesn't belong to the people who use AI the most. It belongs to the people who think the most creatively about what to use it for.
